I mean... there was effectively no difference between conventional fire bombing and the atomic bombs in terms of destruction. Most of jap cities were already leveled by the time nukes were used. They might have seem impresive and might have had some effect on the surrender, but not because of their power, rather because of the specticle of it. My bet is that japs would surrender witnin a month or 2 even I the nukes were never used, hiroshima and Nagasaki would have had similar level of destruction and deathtoll with a conventional bombing. There was almost no difference in using nukes and not using them.

My grandfather was one of the initial cadre for the 442nd. He was wounded outside a French city the regiment liberated shortly before this operation. He lost a lot of his friends over the course of the war. I think the most inspiring part too is they did all of this and sacrificed all of those lives while their families back home were being held in prison camps.

Dalquist ordered the 442nd assemble for commendation. Allegedly, the general became angry because so few men were in attendance. A Lt Col responded with something to effect of, "That's all that's left, sir." Records state the 442nd suffered over 150 KIA and 1800 wounded. My great-uncle served with them. He fell shortly after the Rescue and lays in Epinal cemetery.

In France however therr wasn't much encounters with any armor not because there wasn't but because they were destroyed already. Example the battle of the bag of falaise, the german counterattack on Normandy, ended up with nearly 90% of all the german armor destroyed by the allied air force.
